Photograph - anti-apartheid protestors at Twickenham, c1969-1970

These protesters were photographed by Christine Quick, during anti-apartheid demonstrations at Twickenham Stadium. The protests were against the South African rugby team's tour of Britain and Ireland in 1969. During this time South Africa was governed by an apartheid Government. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation used in South Africa between 1948 and 1994 which restricted the civil and legal rights of non-white people. Here the demonstrators are marching towards the stadium before South Africa's match against the Barbarians. The protesters are dressed in striking outfits and carry placards showing their opposition to apartheid.
