Racquet stringer, Royal Exchange building - Photograph

Fred Truluck opened his racquet-stringing business in the Royal Exchange 21 years before John Eastcott took this photo. He had placed two racquets in the shop window, one broken and the other restrung, and since then he had had at least one racquet every day to mend or restring. On average, Mr Truluck restrung 12 racquets a day and repaired another 20 to 30. Sir William Tite's Royal Exchange building, as well as being a centre for commerce and retail, also temporarily housed collections from the Guildhall Museum from 1955.
