Travelling community caravans Martello Street, London Fields - Photograph

Beneath the railway bridge on Martello Street in Hackney's London Fields, families from the travelling community occasionally parked their caravans to seek shelter. Having graduated in photography from Berkshire College of Art and Design in 1980, Alan Delaney concentrated on photographing the urban landscape. He spent ten years exploring a personal 'London by night', which he described as 'the best time to seek out the beauty of the place'. This photo shows how the light at night, be it from street lamps, bonfires or moonlight, can make locations familiar in daylight appear strange and unworldly.
