Kensal Green Cemetery - Photograph

London's first private cemetery opened on 77 acres of land along the Harrow Road, Kensal Green in 1832. It was one of seven commercial cemeteries established by The General Cemetery Company in the 19th century. Many famous people are buried there, including engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, author Wilkie Collins and artist John Waterhouse. Grand sculptures add to the drama of the snow-covered landscape. Born in Holland, Yoke Matze moved to London in 1982 to study for a degree in photography. Matze began photographing this Victorian cemetery, and the ritual of burial ceremonies for people of different cultures in the area, shortly after arriving in London.
