The caretaker, Mr Izaat, on the roof of Hanbury Buildings, Poplar - photograph

The caretaker, Mr Izaat, is photographed on the roof of Hanbury Buildings. The tenement, which had once stood derelict, had been inadequately refurbished before being let out to families. It was regarded as one of the worst slums in east London. Although Mr Izaat worked many hours, he was very poorly paid. Cyril Arapoff photographed him here inspecting a hole in the gutter of the roof, which was causing the flat below to become waterlogged. Arapoff, with journalist Jack Barker, produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
