Children playing in courtyard of Hanbury Buildings, Poplar - photograph

These children are playing in what was described as the 'plague spot of east London', the sunken courtyard of Hanbury Buildings. Cyril Arapoff took the photo from behind iron railings, conveying the children's prison-like existence. The previously derelict site had been let out to families after minimal refurbishment. The residents were so aggrieved at their appalling living conditions that they joined the Poplar Tenants' Defence League to help them organise a rent strike. Arapoff, with journalist Jack Barker, produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
