Mr Mix and his children in Hanbury Buildings, Poplar - photograph

Mr Mix lived with his wife and children at No 32 Hanbury Buildings, one of east London's worst slums. The ventilator of the outdoor lavatories overlooked the family's living room. Mr Mix's wife, rushing to hospital whilst expecting a child, had been forced to negotiate the stairs in darkness. The residents of this tenement block, aggrieved at their appalling living conditions, joined the Poplar Tenants' Defence League to help them organise a rent strike. Arapoff, with journalist Jack Barker, produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
