Children in Hanbury Buildings, Poplar - photograph

Cyril Arapoff photographed these boys at home inside the run-down Hanbury Buildings. The residents of this tenement block, aggrieved at their appalling living conditions, joined the Poplar Tenants' Defence League to help them organise a rent strike. The boys acted as messengers during the strike, which lasted many weeks and proved a triumph for the tenants. Arapoff, with journalist Jack Barker, produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
