The Tiled Kitchen - painting; oil on panel

This painting shows the painter's daughter, Janet, in her early 30s, washing dishes in the kitchen of the family home at 19 Queensland Avenue in Merton. The kitchen is an ordinary kitchen of the day, fitted with hygienic tiles, functional equipment and a gas stove, and with a separate pantry where food could be kept cool. Harry Bush, known as the 'Painter of the Suburbs', and his wife lived at this Merton address from 1914 until the end of their lives.
