shoe; ballet shoe

These pink satin ballet shoes were worn by Anna Pavlova in the 1920s. Anna Pavlova was born in St Petersburg in 1881 and studied at the Imperial Ballet School from 1892-98. She left with the title 'premire danseuse', and made her debut at the Maryrinsky Theatre. Pavlova's technique and imaginative interpretation of classical ballet roles led to her quickly becoming a favourite with audiences throughout Europe and America. She appeared in the first season of Serge Diaghilev's Russian ballet in Paris (1909) and in London (1911). In 1912, Pavlova bought Ivy House in Golders Green. She continued to tour and perform worldwide with her small company until her death in 1931.
