Tower Suite - coaster

This drinks coaster was used in the Tower Suite cocktail bar in the Post Office Tower. In 1965, the opening of the Post Office Tower (now the B.T. Tower) marked a new age of telecommunication in London. Used to distribute television programmes and telephone calls, it acted as a giant radio station and was the forerunner of the mobile phone revolution. The tower closed to the public in 1971 after an I.R.A. bomb exploded on the 33rd floor. The restaurant and cocktail bar at the top of the tower, run by Butlin's, became one of London's most exciting dining experiences. The floor revolved through 360 every 25 minutes. The restaurant closed in 1980.
