Entrance to Tower Gateway station on the Docklands Light Railway - photograph

Tower Gateway station was opened in 1987 as the original terminus of the Docklands Light Railway (D.L.R.). However, this provided a poor connection to London Underground. It also proved difficult for the station to cope with rising passenger numbers, so the line was extended to Bank station in 1992. The original 15 D.L.R. stations shared design features such as the glass dome shown here. The dome covers the entrance to the elevated station platform, which is reached via the escalators and stairs seen in this photograph.
