Driver and conductor in front of a bus at Harrow-on-the-Hill - photograph

In the 1970s, most buses in London still had a two-person crew. This picture shows a driver and conductor standing in front of the double-decker bus they worked on. The bus is an R.T.-type built in the 1950s, so was about 20 years old here. Its destination, partly visible on the front of the bus, was Harrow-on-the-Hill. The men are standing by the driver's cab, which was closed off from the rest of the bus. The man on the left is the driver. The man on the right, carrying a Gibson ticket machine, is the conductor. He would travel in the back of the bus collecting fares and checking tickets.
