Street scene showing western end of Aldwych, looking east - photograph

Description:
This photo shows the western end of Aldwych, looking east, during the Kingsway-Aldwych improvement works. The Waldorf Theatre and the adjoining site of the Waldorf Hotel can both be seen. The Aldwych Theatre is advertising The Beauty of Bath, which opened there on 19 March 1906. The actors Seymour Hicks and Ellaline Terriss were at this time the idols of the theatregoing public. Hicks also wrote comedies and was a theatre manager. He commissioned the building of the Aldwych theatre, and provided a then unknown P G Wodehouse with his first paid writing job: creating lyrics for the topical encores in this play. Later, Seymour Hicks gave another unknown hopeful his directorial break, a Leytonstone boy named Alfred Hitchcock.
