Buses undergoing repairs at Elmers End garage - photograph

This picture was taken at the London General Omnibus Company bus garage at Elmers End. It shows the docking pits inside the garage. These pits allowed mechanics get under the buses to check that everything was working correctly. The two men at the right of the shot are mechanics. They are standing at workbenches and adjusting parts. Four N.S.-type buses are standing in a row above the pits. The bus in the foreground has had a wheel removed. It is an old-style solid tyre. Pneumatic, air-filled tyres were introduced in the late 1920s but it took some time for all buses to be converted.
