A street scene at eastern end of the Strand - photograph

This view of the eastern end of the Strand looks towards St Mary le Strand. The street is full of traffic, horse buses crowded with passengers, ponies and traps making deliveries and pavements are crowded with pedestrians. The unmarked road would have been lit at night by gas lamps. Though electric light was widely used in late 1870s London, it had still not come to the Strand, one of the major streets, linking the West End to the City. All the buildings on the left were demolished when the Aldwych was constructed shortly after this photo was taken.
