Heathrow station with the air traffic control tower behind - photograph

When the third terminal opened at Heathrow in 1969, transport links to the airport had to be improved. Plans were made to extend the Piccadilly line from Hounslow to serve the Heathrow terminals. The station was opened in 1973. The tall building behind the station was the air traffic control tower. A fourth terminal at Heathrow opened in 1986. An ultra-modern control tower has been designed to accompany the opening of Terminal Five, due in 2011.
