Directing the traffic at Elephant and Castle - photograph

This is busy traffic scene features trams, pedestrians and a horse-drawn vehicle at Elephant and Castle. A police officer directs the traffic. The centre of Elephant and Castle was severely bombed during the Second World War. The rest of the buildings were demolished during the 1960–61 redevelopment scheme which re-organised the traffic from Lambeth, Southwark and Walworth around two roundabouts. Boissevian and Osmond designed the infamous shopping arcade, which was also built at this time.
