Westminster Bridge during Second World War Victory Celebrations - photograph

This is a night time view over Westminster Bridge during the victory celebrations of 10 June 1946. They took place almost a year after the end of the war. The camera is facing the South Bank and St Thomas's Hospital. The brightly illuminated bridge is full of traffic, mainly trams, driving northward. The austerity of the post-war era meant that victory was celebrated simply, with a line of flags along the route. However there was a spectacular firework display and a show of lights and water effects on the Thames. Wartime searchlights were placed around London and lit up the sky in a dramatic display.
