A horse bus terminus, Cricklewood Broadway - photograph

Description:
This photo shows a horse bus terminus outside the Crown Hotel on Cricklewood Broadway. This route, that dates from when stage coaches often began and finished their journey at inns, terminates at a hotel. Instead of linking to other means of transport, the travellers could rest, eat and drink. Three 'garden seat' horse buses are waiting in the hotel forecourt. To the right of the hotel, a crowd of people surround a new steam bus. They are watching a demonstration by the London Power Omnibus Company. At this time people were trying to find an economic alternative to the horse bus, but steam buses were too unwieldy for London streets and did not operate for any length of time.
