A sight seeing bus crossing Tower Bridge - photograph

Visitors to London have frequently mistaken the bridge in this picture for London Bridge. It is Tower Bridge, which crosses the Thames from the Tower of London on the north bank to Southwark. The bridge is a huge tourist attraction; this picture shows a sightseeing bus crossing the bridge. The bridge comprises two hydraulic bascules which rise and open to allow river traffic to pass. In 1952, a London bus had to leap across the gap when the bridge began to open as the bus crossed.
