Charles Gomm and Caribbean recruits - photograph

This photo shows Mr Charles Gomm, in black jacket with white bow-tie, seated behind a desk. The man on the right is his assistant. The others are applicants for positions with London Transport (L.T.). Charlie Gomm was a recruitment officer for L.T. The company experienced labour shortages after the Second World War and began a series of direct recruitment campaigns. The first campaigns were in areas of the U.K. where there was high unemployment, and in Ireland. In 1956, L.T. opened a recruitment office in Barbados. The picture shows Gomm visiting the office in Barbados in 1956. The L.T. policy was to employ single people and the young men here are all hoping to migrate to a new life in London.
