Traffic at London Bridge - photograph

Large volumes of traffic crossed London Bridge every day. Buses and private motor cars pass in both directions, and pedestrians walk along the bridge. The two buses closest to the camera are both London General Omnibus Company S-types, one open and one with a covered top. The London Bridge shown here is the second constructed on this spot. It is made of Dartmoor granite and was finished in 1831. Designed by John Rennie, it stood in place until 1967, when a third bridge was built to replace it, since the granite bridge was sinking into the Thames. The second bridge was bought by an American and now stands in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where it is part of an English theme park. In the background, on the south side of the river, is Southwark Cathedral.
