Miss D Drury working a key punch machine at 55 Broadway - photograph

This is Miss Drury at work in 1949 at the London Transport head office at 55 Broadway in St James's. She worked in the central record of staff statistics office where details of all employees were kept. Drury is working a key punch machine that took cards printed with staff details and punched holes in the appropriate columns. For example, if an employee was employed on a certain grade, a hole would be punched next to the grade. The cards could then be read by a tabulator, which counted the holes and produced statistical information. The tabulator was a prototype computer and saved thousands of hours of work for office staff like Miss Drury.
