A condenser hoisted on a crane outside Lots Road Power Station, Chelsea - photograph

This is a condenser being hoisted off its track at Lots Road in 1926. Its job was to condense the low-pressure steam from the steam turbine back into water. Lots Road power station was built in 1902-05 to power the District, Piccadilly, Northern and Bakerloo lines. It was built to run on coal, and was conveniently placed near Chelsea wharves to allow loaded barges to dock near the power station to deliver the coal. There was a big expansion period between 1920 and 1925 when the capacity of the station was increased from 63 to 92 megawatts.
