A horse tram on the flooded Lea Bridge Road - photograph

This photo shows a horse-drawn tram on the flooded Lea Bridge Road. The water could be floodwater from the nearby river Lee (or Lea) Before 1948, when a flood relief channel was built that prevented further flooding, it was not unusual for the River Lea to burst its banks and flood the streets. Today the Lee provides one sixth of London's water supply as well as being the focus of the recreation area at Lee Valley Marina and Walthamstow Marshes Nature Park.
