Model of Kings Cross Underground station as used at the Fennell enquiry - architectural model

This scale model is a detailed representation of Kings Cross/St Pancras Underground station and focuses in particular on the layout of the escalators in relation to the platforms. The model was made for the Fennell enquiry in 1988 that, followed the Kings Cross disaster the previous year. Thirty-one people died as a result of a fire that began when a passenger dropped a lighted match on the Piccadilly line escalator. Excess grease and waste on the underside of the escalator helped the fire take hold, and it spread rapidly up the escalator shaft and into the ticket hall. Following the enquiry, many safety recommendations were made and implemented, including the replacement of the wooden escalators and the installation of fire detectors.
