Cane - cane

Paul Sowan, a teacher at Norbury Manor Boys' School, Croydon, used this cane in the 1960s. Although Paul thought that caning children was barbaric, his headmaster insisted that he occasionally punish the boys by striking them with the cane on the bottom. In the early 1960s all teachers could cane children. By the 1970s, only senior staff were allowed to use the cane. In 1987 corporal punishment in state schools was banned.
